Circularization Program | 5th Edition

The Madrid Circular Economy Innovation Center (CIEC Madrid) launches the Circularization Program for Companies in the Hospitality Sector.

CIEC Madrid – The Circular Economy Innovation Center of Madrid City Council is launching a call for applications to participate in the Water Sector Circularization Program. This comprehensive initiative is designed to drive the adaptation and competitiveness of companies operating in the industry within the City of Madrid. The program focuses on creating value and improving environmental and social performance, while promoting more digitalized, sustainable business models that are aligned with changing consumer demands.

In a business environment characterized by constant evolution, regulatory changes, and increasing consumer expectations, companies in the water sector face new scenarios and critical challenges. Circularity, climate change, product quality, social responsibility, and other factors have become key drivers of purchasing decisions. In response to this reality, the program proposed by CIEC Madrid seeks to strengthen the sector’s ability to adapt to these emerging demands and opportunities.

The program will cover the following topics:

    • Ecodesign: Integrating environmental criteria into the design of products, services, and processes to reduce their environmental impact throughout their entire life cycle, from conception to end-of-life. This includes material selection, energy efficiency, waste management, and resource optimization.

    • Water and Carbon Footprint Reduction: Reducing water and carbon footprints in the hospitality sector is essential to promoting sustainability and improving operational efficiency.

    • Waste Reduction: Minimizing waste through menu planning, the implementation of waste separation systems, efficient purchasing and storage management, food waste composting, reduced use of disposable products, and increased reuse and recycling.

    • Energy Efficiency: Adopting technologies and practices that improve energy efficiency can reduce operating costs and the environmental impact associated with business activities.

    • Food Waste Reduction: Reducing food waste through food donation initiatives and the use of innovative technologies is a key priority.

    • Staff Training: Raising awareness and training employees on sustainable practices and behaviors.

    • Innovation in Sustainable Practices: Encouraging innovation in sustainable practices can strengthen a company’s market positioning and increase its profitability.

Program Objectives:

  1. Program Objectives:

To enable companies to transition toward a circular economy by:

    • Understanding each company’s current situation and identifying opportunities for improvement.
    • Designing specific strategies that support and accelerate the transition to a circular economy.
    • Exploring innovative technologies that can facilitate this transformation.
    • Raising awareness and encouraging companies to actively engage in the adoption of circular economy principles.

Ensuring an Effective and Adaptive Program

To achieve this, each company will develop a Pilot Project focused on implementing an initiative to improve its circularity performance. The project will be presented to the Madrid City Council during the Demo Day.

    Each Pilot Project will include:

    • An analysis of the challenge or opportunity to be addressed.
    • A detailed action plan.
    • An implementation timeline.
    • Performance indicators to measure the circularity improvements achieved.

Finally, once the program has concluded, participating companies will be contacted to assess the progress and development of their Pilot Projects.

Methodology:

The project will address the previously described areas through:

  • 7 in-person group sessions, each lasting 2 hours.
  • 10 individual online sessions for each participant, each lasting 1 hour, providing support in the design and development of a circularity pilot project.

The goal is that, based on the initial assessment of each company and the improvement opportunities identified, a pilot project will be designed and implemented to enhance the company’s circularity performance.

The group sessions will cover the following topics:

  • Welcome Session
  • Ecodesign
  • The Business Case for the Circular Economy
  • Packaging
  • Zero Waste
  • Holistic Industry Perspective
  • Demo Day

The program will involve six companies, preferably non-circular SMEs based in Madrid, operating in different stages of the hospitality sector value chain. The recruitment period will open during the week of 19 May 2025.

The program will provide participants with educational materials, guides, videos, and other resources to support the implementation of circular economy practices.

Finally, during the Demo Day, participating companies will present their circularity pilot projects to the Madrid City Council.

We’re Launching the 5th Edition of the CIEC Circularization Program!

We support companies looking to integrate the circular economy into their business models.
