The CIEC Madrid FabLab

Número 1
Research and Support for CIEC Madrid

Research into new economic models and the use of technology to create new models.

Número 2
Promoting the Cradle to Cradle Philosophy

Innovating in design solutions so that the waste generated by the FabLab, CIEC, or the community can become biological or technological “nutrients” that return to the start of the cycle.

Número 3
Being Part of the FabLab Network

We aim to be a FabLab that is a global benchmark for integrating the circular economy philosophy into our processes and projects.

Número 4
Building Community Work

FabLabs form a global network of open-access labs where you can create and make almost anything. They are incubators that foster creativity, self-learning, and sharing.

3D Printer

3D printers are run by software installed on computers. Using plastic filament, they can produce almost any real object from a 3D drawing.

Máquina de corte láser trabajando sobre una lámina de material
Laser Cutting

CO2 laser cutting machine. Using heat, it can cut different types of materials such as plastic, foam, wood, glass, fabric, or mild steel.

Arduino

Arduino boards are hardware development boards for building digital and interactive devices that can sense and control objects in the real world.

Software and Computers

All the software needed for digital fabrication, 3D design, and programming.

The Fab Charter: What Defines a FabLab

The Fab Charter is a set of guidelines issued by the Fab Foundation that defines what a FabLab must be in order to be considered one. The most important is that a FabLab, as a community-oriented resource, offers open access to everyone and scheduled access to the training it provides.

Shared Knowledge

FabLabs form a global network of open-access labs where you can create and make almost anything. They are incubators that foster creativity, self-learning, and sharing.

Icono de tecnología abierta: un microchip
Open Technology

FabLabs revolve around two socio-technological movements: DIY (do it yourself) and open source, the free flow of information and knowledge. Teaching is based on projects in progress and on peer-to-peer learning.

Community Service

Access must be universal, so that the tools can be used to make almost anything. Self-learning and sharing are encouraged: users should learn on their own and share the use of the lab with other users.

FabLab Manifesto

Número 1

We believe in collaboration, co-creation, participation, and community building to face the economic, technological, environmental, social, and cultural challenges of today’s changing and unpredictable world.

Número 2

We affirm that entrepreneurial spirit and talent, guided by the goal of preserving natural capital, can create an economy based on innovation and digital technology that puts the environment at its center and brings greater well-being to people.

Número 3

We consider the Fab Lab to be the best infrastructure to support innovation. To fulfill this role, it must be an open, easily (even immediately) accessible, friendly, and generous place that backs the community by giving the necessary support to people who want to add value to society through initiatives and projects.

Número 4

We believe that the circular economy must be the new economic model, and therefore all projects and processes that take place in the Fab Lab must integrate circularity. Besides making the Fab Lab itself a more sustainable place, this allows it to stand as an example of circularity for other Fab Labs and even for other institutions, startups, and companies that need digital fabrication technology.

Número 5

We think that sharing knowledge is a good way to help people grow personally and professionally, and that this always has a positive impact on society.
